October has arrived, and today I'm sharing an edit of four Tops categories for your perusal.
I’ve collated this edit as I have observed the September SS25 Fashion Week shows across NY, London, Milan and Paris as well as reviewing what’s currently available in the market. I love this time of year, as we have new season deliveries arriving in stores, along with the key messages and inspiration filtering through from the international runways creating fertile ground for outfit inspiration.
I grew up in an era when “jeans and nice top” were the go to outfit. Living in a regional area, and before finding sartorial independence such tops were often sourced from my older sister’s wardrobe (there were 4 of them!).
Fast forward to my decade spent in design and manufacturing for major Australian womenswear brands .The ‘top’ was always a unicorn being chased, as when the right one was created, it became a winner that would be repeated in colours and prints at volume and deemed a commercial success, but most importantly it meant the market had been met and the customer had found something they loved.
Here is a round up of 4 top categories that are currently in the market and show longevity, and versatility for the seasons ahead.
For the love capes (a personal favourite) We are seeing an emergence of capes, scarfs and wrap details being applied to trenches and coats (see The Row, Toteme and Mango). Whilst capes aren’t a new shape, the collection of tops silhouettes feels exciting and fresh.
From sculptural to fluid, the range of fabrications and drama allows you to choose your own adventure when it comes to embracing this elevated and timeless shape.
Don’t pack away your pops of red yet, the most recent runways have provided a plethora of inspiration for ways to keep wearing your red pieces in new and exciting colour combinations. Feeling for a deeper shade? Burgundy, Ruby and Beet red will be the next iteration of this hue. The best bit, you can style these colours together, or bring the shade into pants, skirts or accessories.
Wrapped, draped, tucked and gathered. A key detail that has been prevalent in styling over the last 18+ months from knitwear knotted over shoulders and tied around the neck to jackets and coats with attached scarf details (see above Capes).
The variety of silhouettes on offer is broad - think fitted long sleeve options to balance out wide leg pants, to cowls and drapes. Watch as these design details continue to evolve and emerge.
Finishing with the extra sprinkle on top. The embellished button down shirt.
These fit into the category of buy now, keep forever. The classic shirt detail allows for endless styling options from elevating a casual outfit, to providing the extra detail when the occasion calls for it.
I like to buy into pieces like this as they aren’t always available, and I find that these are the wow items that are a timeless addition to your wardrobe.
